I have wordpress set up and running correctly at http://www.ifuw.org/wp/. Now I would like wordpress to power the site’s root. I followed the instructions here Giving WordPress Its Own Directory and copied index.php and .htaccess into the root of the site, edited index.php, changed the settings in the general settings and update my permalinks. I also deleted the index.shtml that was in the root of the site.

After I did that I could access my wordpress site at ifuw.org, but all the links to pages were broken. Links to posts worked but I couldn’t access any pages. Whether I tried to access a page at http://www.ifuw.org/page/ or http://www.ifuw.org/wp/page/ I got a 404 error.

Now I have put everything back and wordpress is http://www.ifuw.org/wp/ and my static files are powering the site’s root.

What am I doing wrong? Does it matter that there are other files in the root of the site? Please help. I am ready to pull out my hair.
    Thank you.

  • Youo should be able to do what you did, bu then may have to regenerate your permalinks by visiting the permalinks page and clicking save

Thanks for the quick reply. I did regenerate my permalinks, but this didn’t help. What was strange is that I couldn’t access my pages with the directory in the URL or without the directory in the URL.

I wondered if the problem were the other files/directories in the site root?

I have many other files and directories in the root. Never had an issue…. I guess if the directories and the page names were the same, that might conflict

I ended up moving all individual files out of the root and leaving only directories and this solved the problem. I didn’t have time to test the files one by one to see which one was the problem.
