    Hi everyone,

I’ll try and give as much background as I can so that people may be able to diagnose what I’ve done wrong. I appreciate your help in advance.

I bought a new hosting account and a domain. On my main account I created a WP install and successfully installed the MU domain mapping plugin. WP works fine. It’s brand new, so there are no posts. Let’s call it http://mysite.ca.

I bought 2 domains, pointed the nameserver at my hosting account, and in my account’s cpanel, set them to be addon domains, operating as subdirectories of my main account, where http://site1.org takes me to the path of mysite/site1.org/.

In my Domain Mapping tab, when I enter a Site ID (I’ve tried ‘1’ and ‘Site Name’) and domain (http://site1.org), unchecking the Primary and hitting Save makes the screen refresh, but nothing appears.

When I go to the Sites tab and add a site, I can add them, but not on that domain. If I enter “site1.org” it says “Missing or invalid site address.” but “site1” will work and start a fully functional WP site in the site1/ subdirectory.

In my cpanel, I added a *.mysite.ca record. But I can’t park the site1.org domain, because it’s an addon. The instructions say either parked or addon, but I’m confused about this part and the reading I’ve done hasn’t cleared this part up for me.

What am I doing wrong? Any thoughts?

    Much appreciated.

    I’m 99% sure that’s wrong. You should point site1.org to mysite.org directly.

I’m not sure I understand. In my cpanel, they’re addon domains using the full/path/myprimarysite/site1.org/ directory, which is then http://site1.org.

Right, you want to point them right at full/path/myprimarysite because myprimarysite is WordPress, and WordPress is what will parse that domain.

Just as you pointed the SUBdomains to full/path/myprimarysite, you point these domains there as well.

Add your desired domain as an add-on domain, and when adding the add-on domain, set the root directory to the root directory of your wordpress multisite installation (and NOT the new site directory that are creating).

I deleted the addon domain (site1.org) and redid it as you described, pointing at http://mysite.ca. So going to http://site1.org redirects immediately to http://mysite.ca.

I tried to then add the domain in the Network Admin tab, but it just refreshes blankly. No error. No new domain shows up.

What’s the order I should be adding the domain then the new WP site in?

I believe you set up the mapping within WP first, THEN point the domain (though Andrea/Ron would speak more for it). Did you read the directions on the plugin page AND Otto’s more visual directions?

I believe you set up the mapping within WP first, THEN point the domain (though Andrea/Ron would speak more for it).

Doesn’t matter. Either way works when both steps are done.

Thanks, everyone. It’s solved. I missed the part about needing to create the new site, then log in to it, and do the domain mapping there, rather than the master installation. I think that part could be clearer in the instructions.

    Thanks again for your help.

    I am totally confused
I have installed mu domain mapping on my main domain and it appears to work.
    I have a main domain
    I have a parked domain
i can log in as network admin and add the parked domain in the plugin “domains” but it does not appear under the “sites” The main domain is under ‘sites’ but not ‘domains’

When I try to put the parked domain into ‘sites’ I keep getting “missing or invalid address’ exactly how should tha address be written?

    Could someone explain what

“I believe you set up the mapping within WP first, THEN point the domain “
    means?

Which domain am I pointing to which? and which dashboard is it done in? I cannot login to my parked domain as it isn’t registering in ‘sites”

    Please help I’m totaly stuck

    thanks

Thanks I had read that alreaady the bit that I am confused about is:

There’s two ways you can actually map a domain to one of your sites. The user screen is the simplest way, if you left that option on before. Log into the site you actually want to map to a new domain, then go to Tools->Domain Mapping.

Which site am I logging into? The primary or the new one?
So does that mean I add the new domain to the primary via ‘domains’ and make it eg number 2 and then log in and add the primary to the new one and make the primary domain number 1 (primary) there as well?

It’s very confusing as I can’t tell anywhere, which way mapping goes. Are you mapping a new domain to an existing primary or mapping a primary to a new one?

    I shall perserve

    thanks

    Susan639 – You’re overthinking πŸ™‚

Log into the site you actually want to map to a new domain

The term ‘site’ means the ‘blog’ you set up. Remember, you’re pointing newdomain.com to firstdomain.com/sitename right?

So the site you want to map TO is firstdomain.com/sitename

Log into the SITE (firstdomain.com/sitename) you want to map to the new domain (newdomain.com).

    Make sense?

    Ok Thanks again,
My main domain is plumbingadelaide.com, it has a wp install in the root directory
    I installed a parked domain renderingadelaide.com
I installed wp domain mapping on plumbing seems to be working ok

I logged into plumbing as a user NOT as network admin and added rendering as a site
    worked ok
I can log into two separate wp admin and administer them as network admin
    so far so good

    BUT
renderingadelaide.com.au now has a url of
    http://renderingadelaide.plumbing-adelaide.com

    I want http://renderingadelaide.com.au

In network admin both sites show up under ‘sites’
Have I added rendering to the correct place? How do I get the url to read how I want it to?

Thanks you so much for your help

At this point, you should be making a new post (this is marked resolved and we’ve wandered into a place where you need specific help) πŸ˜‰

    From http://ottopress.com/2010/wordpress-3-0-multisite-domain-mapping-tutorial/

Look at Step 4: Mapping the Domain

All you really do is put in a new domain and set it as the primary. Simple.

    Oops Sorry about that
Thanks for your help I have sorted it out
for anyone else confused like me-
after doing as I desribed above I logged into rendering and added http://www.rendering.com as a domain via settings – domains and set it as primary

    regards
