• Hello all,

I have inadvertently overiden the code in my home insert 2 section of the home page settings. I do have a backup of the site but does not know how to restore just this particular section. Is that possible?

Please advise ASAP and thank you,

What did you do exactly? Edited your theme template files? Or changed some settings in the options page of your theme?

    Hello keesiemeijer

Thank you for the quick reply. Basically I overwrote the HTML code in one of the “Home Insert” section while in the structure settings section/Home page setiings in the dashboard. I don’t have a copy of that code handy and would like to retreive it from a backup if possible. I just do not know where or how to retrieve it.

    Thanks in advance,

Is this an option you got from using a plugin? I don’t know where the “Home Insert” or “Structure Settings” are in a traditional WordPress Install. Could be wrong on that…

If you’re using a plugin and want to remove its effects on the site just disable it…if you want to recover your own custom-inputted data in a given field that you’ve overwritten, you may very well be out of luck.

Still not sure what you did? Did you alter some html in a theme template file?

    if you can login try:

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?
    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    if you cannot login try:
    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    Hello keesiemeijer

I am not refering to a template file or a plugin but to a custom HTML code that I added within the dashboard under “Appearance/Structure Settings/Home page settings. If you go there you will see three sections Home Insert 1 2 & 3. You can insert custom HTML code in there to customize youe home page. I would like to retrieve this code from an old backup of the site if possible.

    Thanks again

I am not refering to a template file or a plugin

Yes, you are. That setting field was most likely added by the theme you are using. I cannot see what you are referring to because that field was custom added by your theme.

If you didn’t back up your site, and that’s not code that came with the theme when you first installed it then it is most likely gone forever.

    Hello tasty.donuts

Pardon my ignorance, I only ever worked with this theme that I inherited from someone else. I do have a backup, I just do not know which file to retrieve from the backup in order to restore this.

    Thanks

Hmm well now you are pushing into a space that I am fairly ignorant in … I am guessing that this would have been saved in the database somewhere by this theme. If you dive into the code for the theme and find this entry field you may be able to track down where it is going in the database.

I’d say your easiest option to recover would be to load your backup into a database and then re-link it with WP, copy out the field in question.

I cannot restore the dashboard menu on the left, where the list is. I installed a plugin, and when it was finished, this column was gone, how do I restore this. thanks

Try disabling / uninstalling the plugin.

http://yourblogsurl.com/wp-admin/plugins.php if you can’t see the link anymore

Are you sure the list on the left is not just collapsed? (If you see little icons with an arrow at the bottom clicking the arrow will pop it back out).
