• Hello, and thank you in advance for helping me.

After I publish a post, and then go back into WP to edit the post, why is WP automatically removing the lines/spaces between paragraphs? This is very annoying and I can’t seem to get WP to stop this action.

Should I be using a different text editor instead of WordPress?

I searched the Forum posts for about an hour but did not find an answer to my question. Also, I tried to call WordPress to speak with someone from support. Apparently, they are on a retreat to St. Louis, Missouri until mid August.

Also, I tried to call WordPress to speak with someone from support. Apparently, they are on a retreat to St. Louis, Missouri until mid August.

That’s … funny cause there’s no one to call (unless you’ve got VIP hosting with wordpress.com). WordPress.org is for self hosted WP ssupport, and it’s free.

If you’re using the HTML editor, use <br /> or put &nbsp; on a line.

If you’re using the GUI editor, I know Shift-enter makes a single space, but I don’t know that you can force EXTRA breaks.

I’m having that same problem! It wasn’t happening before I did the latest update to wordpress. I’m using the regular post editor and when I make a line break its visually adding it then when I post it, its not there. If I manually add one of the suggestions above it adds a gigantic, looks like 2 line, space. Its not adding or keeping or recognizing them correctly. Another issue is if you insert a picture first then in the editor add a line break it will not recognize it. I’d love some help too. Thanks!!!

    Site url?

Thanks for taking a look Esmi! Mine is http://www.theoddgirl.com I will say it occasionally works but more often than not its a big struggle.

Can you post a link to a page the demonstrates the issue?

    http://www.theoddgirl.com/2011/08/sneaks-and-intro-week-is-at-an-end/

In this post you can tell the spaces (line breaks) are too big between the last 3 small paragraphs. Also there should be one between the first picture and the type. I keep adding it and it keeps not showing up. If I manually add one to the HTML it comes out odd like those last ones.

Some of the “paragraphs” are actually in <div></div> tags – which will have no paddings or margins. In places where the space is too large, you’ve added in empty <p></p> tags – effectively double-spacing the div blocks.

I actually didn’t add them, it is adding them. When I bring up the HTML portion of the editor I see the div tags you mentioned but not the <p> tags. I see   between the “paragraphs” though. If I were to insert a picture, type a post in the Visual portion using the regular Enter for line breaks, that is the weirdness I get, without me linking or other extras.

In the post below that one http://www.theoddgirl.com/2011/08/the-last-couple-days/ I see the <p> tag and didn’t have any problem that I remember.

I think it stems from adding a pic first thing, not sure why that would be, but I can’t add line breaks and have wonky text when I do that. This is another post that I remember gave me fits http://www.theoddgirl.com/2011/07/blow-me-away/ Its not as simple as “don’t do that” as if I type then add the pic up there after the fact it goes weird too.

I really appreciate your help Esmi!

    Hi marionakeyes

I had the same problem. It’s something with the default editor which removes <p> and some others tags. It has to do with the theme used.

Install the plugin “TinyMCE Advanced” which, as it’s name suggests, enhances the default TinyMCE editor greatly, and in the plugin settings you will find the possibility for avoiding removal of these tags. It’s found as a checkbox under Advanced settings, the checkbox caption is: “Stop removing the <p> and tags when saving…”.

Hope it will solv your problem as it did mine.

It’s something with the default editor which removes <p> and some others tags.

That only happens if you switch from the HTML to the Visual Editor.

It has to do with the theme used.

That’s a separate issue relating to some themes not using the_content() correctly.

    @someoddgirl: Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

I’ll try both and let you know how it goes. Thanks so much!!! 🙂

I’ve done both. I’m already using the Twenty Eleven theme, though modified. I deactivated every plug in and also tried installing TinyMCE. If I start a post in the HTML portion of the editor, blank, then click over to the Visual Editor it seems like everything works fine. If I start in Visual and add a pic I still can’t correctly add linebreaks. Then if I click to HTML then back to Visual they are there but not the <p> code but the ‘ ‘ code. I hope that made sense!

not the <p> but &nbsp; it didn’t show up lol
