• I’ve been operating on my current installation of WordPress for a couple years. I have it set up for multi-site, and currently have 5 separate sites set up and running on it.

Lately, I’ve been having a few weird problems with my WP install, though it’s only been in my primary blog so far.

    • My custom menus won’t save. They worked fine for a long time, but in the past month or two if I edit or move an item in the menu, it stops showing up, as if I had deleted its menu item. When I add new items, they’ll be saved and work for a few minutes, but then they disappear.
    • I have a plugin (Feedwordpress) that’s creating new posts from two RSS feeds. However, the posts from one of the feeds are disappearing if they’re published before a certain day. If I set the plugin to create new posts as Drafts or Pending, they appear in my Posts list, but when I try to publish them, they disappear. The other feed being imported does not have this problem.
    • I just wrote a very long post from scratch, using the Post editor, and published it. After a few minutes, it disappeared as if it had never existed. Fortunately it was published to my site’s RSS feed, so I was able to salvage it. (whew!)

Anyway, I’m hoping someone out there knows how I can fix this problem. My guess is that my WP install is irrevocably damaged, and I should just reinstall. If that’s the case, does anyone know of any good tools for making the reinstallation of multiple blogs, templates, and plugins as easy as possible?

    Thanks for your help.

  • Have you tried:
    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.
    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

Have you checked the database to see if the missing posts are there?

Hmm…that’s interesting. I just checked my database, and the post DOES still exist there. Post_Status says “inherit”, whatever that means.

I’ll try the other stuff you mentioned too. My theme is basically just a modified version of Sandbox, but it doesn’t hurt to try a different theme. I’m pretty sure that won’t be the issue, because the post did publish, but disappeared from the back-end post list too.

Does resetting your plugins folder (I’m not sure how to do that) cause your plugins to lose their settings too?

    Thanks for the help.
