    Found a solution!!!

Swap to the default permalinks and then back to what you have to make wp rewrite the .htaccess file

    Worked.

I’ve been having the same problem, but your solution isn’t working for me. I’ve swapped back and forth between default and “pretty” permalinks, but I get the same problem that everything gets redirected to the main page when anything other than default permalinks is set. The .htaccess file is getting rewritten each time and, as far as I can tell, it is being rewritten correctly.

My WordPress installation is in a subdirectory of the main site and the .htaccess file is being rewritten in the subdirectory. Do I need to do this in the .htaccess file in the roote directory?

Is modrewrite enabled on the server?

Also, is your install in the main directory, or a subdirectory?

That would be where the .htaccess needs to be

From everything I can tell, mod_rewrite is enabled. The hosting company says it is and I have two other WordPress installations on the same server with permalinks working just fine, one in a root directory and one in a subdirectory. The one causing problems (a third installation of WordPress, in a different subdomain from the other two) is in a subdirectory. When I enable permalinks, the .htaccess file in that subdirectory gets rewritten.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated!

OK< well it sounds like the .htaccess is going to the proper place. You don’t happen to have any plugins active do you? There are a few which can cause this flake out

I have been adding a few plugins lately to try and develop the perfect combination for my site and since then the links have flaked. Will try killing 1 by 1 and see if there is any correlation. Will try to remember to report back here.

It was a plugin! I recently moved from a server running Windows 2003/IIS6 to a server running Linux. WordPress 3.1 had a bug that caused infinite redirects for servers running that combination of Windows and IIS. I had installed a plugin that fixed that bug. Disabling that plugin, which I don’t need anymore anyway, did the trick.

    Which plugin was it GEPaul?

Good stuff! glad you found it!

@cosmicray, don’t forget to also reset your permalinks

Sometimes when they flake, just visiting the permalinks settings page and hitting save is enough to get you going again

    Thanks for the input guys.

I’ve been through all the recent barch of plugins. Deactivated one by one then tried the more tag after a full refresh of the front page of the blog. Still no change.

I went in and reset the permalinks to default. Still no improvement.

    My blog address is http://www.consultingcumbria.co.uk

The theme is cubit (themedump) It presents posts on the front page which are in the consulting cumbria category.

I’m a bit puzzled by all of this as I didn’t notice after any particular action.

Have you also tried switching to twentyten theme for testing? (Gotta try all the basics to rule out all the normal offenders)

I see your pages work….. like off of the top nav menu

I’ll give it a go. Curious it works under that theme
