I've searched the archives and haven't really found any posts on upgrading from Fantastico other than many references to it not being available yet.

I recently discovered that it is avail on my server. Anyone have any experience positive or negative? I'm sure it's easier to do it from Fantastico, but does it work better manually?

    Thanks!!!

it is convenient through an installer, sure. does it work better? highly unlikely. Fantastico auto-installer may ease up the installation process and solve hurdles that are specific to the restrictions imposed by your hosting service provider.

learn both methods. install manually and through Fantastico. make your judgements, comparisons and learn along the way. doing so will give you a better birds eyeview, a better picture of how it works and what needs to be done to get to work (eg. database, .htaccess file (for permalinks) etc...)

I'm sure it's nice to learn both methods, but if I have one blog, and that blog has a few hundred links that will all re-ping if I have to restore the database to try it "the other way," I'm not sure this is feasible in my scenario.

I think what you're telling me is that the Fantastico auto installer might be configured for the specific set-up of my ASP("may ease up the installation process and solve hurdles that are specific to the restrictions imposed by your hosting service provider"). Im personally a bit skeptical that most ASP's would take this time, but it's possible.

So if anyone has actually done it, let me know. Otherwise it sounds like I'll be doing the install through the back door (manually).

    Thanks!!!

OK - so here's my experience. I used the fantastico upgrade tool and it worked fine.

    • backed up everything
    • disabled all plugins
    • reverted back to standard theme
    • upgraded on fantastico
    • went back to the theme I usually use
    • turned on plugin's that work with 2.0
    • reinstall plugin's that needed to be upgraded

I'm not saying this will work for everyone, but it was pretty much a perfect and very easy upgrade for me.
