Support » Fixing WordPress » Creating website, moving to new server

  • Hi all,
I’ve got a slightly complicated scenario here. I am building a website for a client. I’m using WordPress as the backbone of everything, and I host with Host Monster. The client insists that I build the website on my server, then when it’s done, I transfer it to his server.

    Here’s my roadblocks:

    1. Is this possible? (Moving the entire website to a new server and changing to his domain name?)

    2. If so, I need to know how…(very detailed would be great, I’m not a huge code junkie at all)

    3. I’ll be overwriting an old website as well, so I’m not exactly sure how that would work. He does not host with Host Monster. He told me his hosting name, but I can’t remember at the present. If that is needed info, I will be happy to find that out.

Thanks in advance for any help.

the easiest thing you can do is create a server on your own cpu, this is the best way I have found to work with wordpress. I use xampp and its awesome. It basically turns your site into server complete with mysql and phpmyadmin.

Follow the instructions that come with the download and you’ll be golden. This will give you more control. Here’s the link it’s open source too http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

This also makes it easier to move sites around.

Keep all the old files intact somewhere so that you have them to fall back on.

This is easy to achieve I assure you.

    3. Doesn’t matter if you don’t want the old site anymore.
