Well, now that I created that thread, the link works again, whats going on, where are all the other posts that were associated with semiologic?

OK, as I was adding the semiologic tag back to all my posts, I noticed that Denis may have been kicked off here? Not that he would ever come back here and post now that this has happened, preventing him from replying to any posts is preventing the only person who can help with most of the semiologic issues from helping. I hope this is resolved.

    Nobody has been “kicked-off”.

Denis is the only one who can help because Semiologic is a fork of WordPress. It’s is also a commercial product.

The name Semiologic was appearing in the tag cloud. So that’s a product name appearing in what should be a neutral forum. While you may love the Semiologic name and code, I would take exception to other names appearing in that cloud – because once we allow one product we are completely powerless to stop others.

    This is NOT Denis’ forum.
It is NOT for the exclusive use of Semiologic code.
It IS for ALL WP users.

    This is what I wrote:

Sad, so what if semiologic appears as a tag, I fail to see the problem even after your explanation. Its simply a way for a segment of wordpress users who use semiologic to find each other and get support. And whats wrong with that?

    Okay.
So what about if a company that uses WP to create splogs starts posting here and by next week they have a great big SPLOG tag up in the cloud.

    I couldn’t remove it.

We can’t be judging who is and who is not worthy.
Authors can STILL use tags but they are NOT permitted in the cloud. This is a neutral forum and the cloud will not be use to promote any products.

    Edit:
If you disagree with this decision which concerns the running of the forum, please join the wp-forums mailing list and bring the issue up for discussion.

OK, now I THINK understand what you are saying, could not for the life of me figure out what the heck you meant by cloud, but are you referring to the mixed list of links all in different sizes at the top of some of these pages? I don’t see semiologic there yet the link http://wordpress.org/tags/semiologic still works. Please explain, and thank you.

Yes I did mean the tag cloud, and Semiologic was in there.

First: The package that Denis offers is – strictly speaking – not WP. He has added code to it and sells a version. Here we support WordPress.

Second: That tag cloud should hold items that are pertinent to all WP users. In that cloud, the larger the word the more topics there are and the more prominent that word becomes. A tag such a “Plugins” or “IE” has no commercial link behind it. Those tags are worth nothing. If a commercial product were to get into that cloud then that is effectively a point of advertising.

These forums get hundreds of visitors every day. The forums need to be a place where people can post / answer and read without being hit with commercial information (other than Good Hosts threads which are a regular and relevant to all things online). So from a viewing figures point of view, that tag cloud is quite prominent.

Let’s say Semiologic stayed in that cloud. It stays because Denis releases code and helps his users out. Now what if someone else releases some code and also helps his users out, and they also give a link to the forum which auto-inserts a tag ? Because we let Semiologic stay, we have to let the new tag stay – even if it says ‘Pornblog’ or ‘Splog’ or ‘GreatHostingForLe$$’. Either we let everyone, or no-one.
This is not anything against Denis – it IS against the forums becoming exploited. While Denis may not have exploited the forum, the tag certainly showed that such use could lead to abuse. That’s why it had to go.
And the tag SHOULD still be used.

As it says in the post above, I would encourage all authors to use tags with their names as that benefits everyone – but no such tags will make it into the cloud.

Yep, agreed on all counts, thanks for explaining. So this link: http://wordpress.org/tags/semiologic can still work without semiologic being in the “cloud”? I notice it is working, yet semiologic is not in the cloud.

Yes, that tag will still work.

You can – if it’s working again – get an RSS feed for any tag which is how authors can keep track of how their plugins / themes are doing if they use the tag.
Currently it looks like 140 tags are needed to get into the cloud so what will happen is about monthly this tag and any other author tags will be reset.
Everyone benefits from this – unfortunately there had to be a casualty for us to realise the potential and that has landed with Semiologic.
