[Plugin: WordPress SEO by Yoast] archives not working and dup content

disable the date-based archives

So this could be considered dub content? I enabled this at first then saw my archives just linked to home page… so now no one can see the archives? kind of a catch 22 here, its good for seo but bad for the reader if he wants to see older articles? Am I on the wrong path here, is there a better way to keep archives from being dup?
