Can’t alter category permalinks

I’m using WP 2.0 and have been able to successfully alter my permalink structure to

domainname.com/archive/%year%/%postname%/

Under Options>Permalinks, I’ve also attempted to enter a custom prefix for my category URIs, in order to get

domainname.com/category/<specific tag here>

However, while this is represented in the body of my WP pages (ie, the links show up this way), each link in this fashion takes me to my 404 page. When I enter domainname.com/archive/category/<specific tag here>/ I *do* get the correct page.

What do I need to do to create the custom link *without* the “archive”?
