• My ISP recommended WordPress as a good tool for building my little website. I had tried GoogleSites and it is pretty unusable – many edit functions just don’t work. I have been using FrontPage 2003, which is great, maybe limited, but not fully supported by my ISP, and seemingly not mainstream.

I’ve been employed as a programmer since 1970, I used octal dumps to debug the cobol compiler and the good old ‘operating system’ and to identify that the circuit board doing one of the floating point operations was failing, so I’m not completely dumb, just a bit behind the times, or on the wrong side of 60, perhaps.

Anyway, why this obsession with BLOGs? Is WordPress for building a nice little 10 page web site or not? Your product pages seem to use the word BLOG a thousand times more than WebPage. Is that a hint that I’m in the wrong place.

And why would you suggest that installing is easy.
Its easy if you already run Apache/PSP/MySQL on your computer.
But if you’ve been using GooglePages or GoogleSites or Frontpage to play around, then you probably don’t, and you immediately wonder if there is room on the old laptop for all this stuff.

You might explain, somewhere up front, how this all fits in, and not assume that we are all PHP programmers, running our own Web Server on our laptop.

You might say – “for guru’s only”, or provide a nice simple all in one install that gives us Apache/PHP/MySQL/WordPress in a bundle. I know thats a bit simplistic, but it must be where many of us are at.

I’m sorry this is a bit whingey, and I will get off my butt and do some installing etc, but maybe there is room for a simpler intro paragraph at the front of the WordPress home page.

Or would you recommend some other product for an old bloke.

Maybe the password you gave me, 0rOcT!Fx(2Ed, was a hint that this is not for wimps. What planet would a password like that come from?
Cheers, and I love you all.

    why this obsession with BLOGs?

Becuase that’s how it started 🙂

    Sure.

And why would you suggest that installing is easy.

You’re not supposed to install on your computer, you install on your webserver.

Welcome to the land of internet security.

google is your friend! not meant sarcastically

A couple years ago I didn’t know what wordpress was, or how domain names and hosting worked

I never ask for help to be honest, I just read

I used a 1 click install on godaddy to get Wp set up (NOT a recommendation), once i realized I needed both a domain and hosting

I broke WP a lot trying to set things up

I googled a lot and fixed things

It takes time. But either you take the time and learn, or you pay someone. You are building something. You can’t just decide to build a car with no knowledge, and than do it.

Its a bit hard to grasp concepts at first, but I muddled through it. A lot of people muddle through it. There’s a lot of guidance on various websites available with a little searching.

Usually I remind people that they didn’t learn how to drive a car in a day, and this can be just as complicated as that.
