WP 1.5.2 – bad behavour when pingomatic does not answer

Writing posts started hanging. It took me a while to realize that it was due to pingomatic – default setting at installation – was not answering. It “pings” at the IP level, but apparently hangs when you try to contact the rpc.pingomatic.com site.

Seems like we should consider a bailout, or some function to allow recovery from bad ping services. I’ve not looked at WP 2.0 features in this area. Maybe it’s fixed.
