Greetings, I just installed WP. Then decided I did not like the URL. So I searched on moving WP. I think everything turned out fine.

However, the directions I found are not dated. I find the value of docs, posts, blogs, etc. anywhere on the web that are not dated to be of immediate questionable value. Especially in the tech world where things move fast. The one I found mentioned WP 2.0 and the directions were far out dated.

Be clear. I am not complaining about out dated info. Just undated out dated info. And not just here.

I believe we should all be dating our products. Web searching on some random topic and finding quality appearing help pages, only to find out the data is 7 years old is frustrating. And sites like that I never book mark/tag, or return to. It just appears to be unprofessional to me. Imagine going to the library and not being able to find a news paper, magazine, etc. from Feb 2001, or yesterday, because there are no dates on them?

So please consider dating WP.org docs AND your own personal site products. Info on cell phones from Cnet 2010 or 2001 may actually be what people are looking for. But how are they going to find it if people on their own sites will not date their product?

    Peace and Blessings.

wp.org docs are ALL dated. Just not on the front end.

And the codex directions for moving wordpress are up to date.

The front end is WHAT MATTERS.

    No, its not.

Eh. Yes and no. The front end matters for time sensitive docs. News etc. Sure. But not everything needs that.

And the Moving WordPress page is … still how it works 🙂 We haven’t changed that in years. It could use editing to clean it up, but the content is still correct.

The ‘Docs’ section is questionable. It is documented information, walk through, and such. Customers like to know they are dealing with Fresh and accurate information.

If they have a cycle to review and update all docs here, that is great on the back end. But with out the stamps, there is no way to know if this is occurring.

Thus, when I found a doc with questionable info I started to wonder about other information. Not sure the reason for the push back? In my experience be it internal to external customers or internal to internal customers; freshness and accuracy is always important. Hard to verify either with nothing to verify it.

I’m a volunteer, no one pays me, and you (and I) can edit and fix the Codex as needed 🙂 It’s community documentation. We all chip in and keep things up.

Also, calling yourself a ‘customer’ is a bit of a misnomer. A customer is ‘someone who pays for goods or services’ and as this is all free, open source, community driven stuff, you’re just another user, like me 😀 If this was all for pay products, yes, the documentation should be there at day zero. Open Source doesn’t work that way, however.

    What’s unclear? Administration == domain.com/wp-admin 🙂 That’s the Administration page. So go Admin -> Settings -> Permalinks.

But that is the problem. How would I know what to edit or correct? The natural state of docs is to expire unless kept up to date. With no date, I have no idea of status. If I searched and found one I needed and it turned out to be 18 months old I would often take my own time to edit or at a minimum flag it. I had a malware root kit infection the other day. I got great help from a site. But their ‘Before you post” doc was somewhat scrambled and bio-polar. So I am taking the time that they took with me to help out and edit it. And that is not just for here as I said. It is for all kinds of info. Mag, Rags, and everything printed does it. Why did dating information stop with Blogs and other web pages?

Customer certainly applies to the tail end of above. If you have a web page and have adverts, you have customers. It can be ‘user’ here at WP.org. However, for this discussion I would say the difference is irrelevant.

There are many new WP users every day. They install. Change their mind on what the url or location of their site should be. So, to play dumb, or just new 🙂 there is no page labeled Admin within WP. Yes, I am playing the brick wall. But it is just an example of either an old hold over, or maybe new user unfriendly labeling. Most new users start out with an admin link on their page. But admin person is very different from administration page. Everything inside WP is an admin page right? 😉

Same way everyone else does. “Hey, that didn’t work. Oh, it’s this now. Edit. Save. Done.”

I get what you’re saying, but you’re trying to look at this from the perspective of a brick-and-morter/traditional business (probably like Microsoft). Open Source doesn’t and CANNOT work that way. Pardon the phrase, but it’s a paradigm shift 🙂

Nope. You have a webpage, you have adverts, you have visitors. The difference is important, because you and I are NOT treated like a customer here! We are treated as MEMBERS of a COMMUNITY. And that is a HUGE bit of difference.

Anyway, I’m sorry you can’t see past the hurdle to understand that you’re one of us, and the best way you (and I, and everyone else) can keep things up to date is to join in. If you’re going to be a brick wall, then I’m not able to help you learn and grow. But if you want to be a river and flow and change with the course of time, welcome to WordPress. Jump on in and help, we’d love to have you 😀
