Support » Fixing WordPress » parent/child categories losing displayed hierarchy in post edit

I have a very basic install of wordpress 3.1 with parent & child categories set up. When I create a new post they’re ordered perfectly in the right hand side “categories” box. (screenshot).

When I save the post (either publish or as a draft) and later return to edit it any child category that wasn’t selected is now displayed outside of its parent. (screenshot)

I’ve tried this with a fresh install of WordPress 3.1 and no plugins and the same thing still happens. Any reason for this?? Or is it a bug?

Just posting to say that I’m having exactly the same problem – would love to know if there’s a fix for this.

Here are some screenshots of what’s going on –

    this turns into this.

    Cheers.

PS – I have just tried to submit this as a bug, but trac doesn’t like my credentials and won’t let me in. I am using my username/password from this forum, and have given it three tries, but no go.

Exact same problem here with WordPress 3.12. Definitely looks like a bug.

Just submitted this as a bug in WordPress Trac using rajdeut’s screenshots(hope he doesn’t mind).

My mistake. Did some more reading and realized this was a “feature” …though I must say it’s a very odd one. Fixed with the “Category Checklist Tree” plugin. Install this plugin and the category hierarchy will display as it should.

Thanks Joe. Downloaded and installed the plugin. Works great!

I can’t believe this “feature” exists. At least make an option to disable it, or more the entire branch of that hierarchy to the top of the list.

I agree. It’s completely ridiculous. Why would anyone want a child category listed above the parent? It’s supposed to be helpful if you have alot of categories but to me, more categories would make it even MORE confusing. You wouldn’t be able to remember WHERE the post was filed.
