    New install of WP 3.1
    Setting up multisite.
Can’t find .htaccess file to edit it as per the instructions and the pages aren’t working without it.
Yes, I have my ftp software set to show invisible files and I’ve also tried through my webhost (godaddy).
    It’s not there.

    Suggestions?

    Note:
I have one site that I haven’t updated to 3.1 yet (its using 3.0.5) and that shows the .htaccess file.

Two other sites that I just updated to 3.1 DON’T show the .htaccess file anymore.

Do the permalinks still owrk? Yes? then it;s there somewhere.

if not, make a new one.

I tried making one according to the instructions Samuel B posted and then edited it according to “Network Setup” instructions in WordPress. Now I can’t access any part of the site – get this message:

    “Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

What happens with a BLANK .htaccess?

If that bombs out too, I would tell GoDaddy ‘Hey, no .htaccess worky! FIX!’ It almost sounds like they turned off Mod Rewrite.

it also takes a good 15 mintues for htaccess changes to show up there.

I will come and check later and see if it’s just a delay.

I also posted in GoDaddy forum to see what’s up with the .htaccess file not being in 3.1.

Their own instructions on setting up a network (multi site) talk about editing the .htaccess but they appear to be written before the 3.1 update.

An htaccess file is not included in the download.

but shouldn’t there still be one on my existing site after updating and also on this site after i’ve created posts with permalinks?

i’ve never created an htaccess file before.

on the exisiting site, yes. do the permalinks work on that site?

On a new site – it depends on your host.

on a second site within a network, there’s no folder for the blog, so no htaccess file for it.

all of my sites are hosted with the same type of plan at godaddy.
the old sites that i updated are working fine – i just don’t see the .htaccess file under ftp anymore. they are just single sites.
i haven’t been able to make a second site on a network, so……

I would ask GoDaddy. They may have changed something.

i just don’t see the .htaccess file under ftp anymore. they are just single sites.

Then just make a htaccess file. It;s just an empty text file.

if it spazzes out on you, then contact your host support.
