apostrophe in user email

Trying to set up a new user, but their email address has an apostrophe, like:

jerry_o’connell@website.com

but it kicks an error of invalid email. Except it IS a valid email address. Not much comes up searching the forums or google.

Any directions I could look to solve this now?
