It is not advisable to change the css files that come with the plugin itself as any changes will be overwritten when the plugin is updated.

We are currently changing how css works, to make it easier for the user to change the style of the form, so please wait for the future release. This will be a documented feature then it is release.

My blog is black and I’d like to change the background colour when an error is shown. At the moment I’m getting a white box with a red border.

The red border isn’t that clear around a white box on a black background.

I didn’t realise it was indicating an error at first.

    How can’t I change the colours ?

Be aware that any changes made to this file will be lost if you update.
Its best to put any css changes in you main theme.
Also things will change dramatically with the next version, as we are going to make changing the styles more of a feature and will also be documenting it.
