es_ES mo file uploaded but not functioning

Hi,

I’m a bit baffled – any good ideas will be very gratefully accepted!

I’ve uploaded the es_ES.mo file to wp-content/languages and have altered the wp-config file to:

define (‘WPLANG’, ‘es_ES’);

This returned an error message – I got rid of the error message by adding:

define(‘WP_LANG_DIR’, WP_CONTENT_DIR . ‘wp-content/languages’);

Actually, originally I had ‘/wp-content/languages’ but that produced an error which went away when I removed the leading forward slash.

I’ve even tried putting the full url in – and I’ve tried it with just /languages.

All I’m getting is the site functioning as usual, but with no translation happening.

I uploaded the twentyten/languages/es_ES.mo file, and that appears to be translating the strings in the theme – but core WP stuff is still English.

Any ideas? Any obvious, stupid misses?!
