Using WordPress with Ping.fm Amplify OR Hootsuite

    I’ve spent a frustrating four hours trying to get my self-hosted WordPress site to work with Ping.fm and Amplify. I tried Hootsuite as well but at least they’re clear that they don’t support self-hosted WP sites yet. The only reason I’m doing this is to have the ability to post to my WP site AND my Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin pages SIMULTANEOUSLY. None of the numerous Ping.FM plugins for WP seem to be working, which is incredible. So I tried to ADD WordPress to my Ping.FM profile. Same with Amplify. But NEITHER of them allow me to do so.

    When I enter my username and password in PING.FM I get the following error message:

    You attempted to login with the username ‘admin’ on WordPress.com. If you were trying to access your self hosted WordPress.org blog, try yourdomain.com/wp-admin/. If you can’t remember your WordPress.com username, you can reset your password by providing your email address. If you have any questions please contact support.

    I just don’t understand what it means when it says “try yourdomain.com/wp-admin/”. If I enter this info into the ‘USERNAME’ field on the Ping.FM website, nothing happens.

    If I try to include WordPress in my Amplify profile I get a similar problem.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Should I persevere with Ping.fm and Amplify or is there a better way to post to my blog AND my social network pages simultaneously?

    Should I wait until Hootsuite support self-hosted WordPress sites?

    As always, any help at all would be v. gratefully received.

    My plugin works just fine, and I think it’ll do exactly what you want. The problem is that Ping.fm doesn’t support posting to self-hosted (WordPress.org) blogs natively, so it keeps trying to connect to WordPress.com using the credentials for your self-hosted blog. That’s obviously not gonna work.

    Install my plugin and set it up as a Custom URL network in Ping.fm. (Instructions are provided when you try to access the plugin settings page for the first time.)

    Thanks Matt, thanks a lot. Your plug in does look great and I’ve just installed it. But I did a test ping from ping.fm and it didn’t register on my WordPress site. I don’t know what I’ve done wrong.

    But that aside, my biggest question is: if your plug in works, will it allow me to post something in WordPress and have ping.fm deliver that AUTOMATICALLY to Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin etc? That’s what I’m looking for. Posting status update in ping.fm and having them distributed is less important. Basically, I want my Facebook friends and Twitter followers etc to know when I’ve posted a new article on my blog.

    One thought about the post not showing up in your blog: if it was a status update or microblog post, make sure you’ve activated/added the plugin’s sidebar widget. Those types of posts only show up in the sidebar widget, while full blog posts from Ping.fm show up in your normal blog. You can, of course, choose which post types show up in your main loop by modifying your theme, but that’s another topic for another thread.

    To answer your question, the plugin is primarily designed to accept posts from Ping.fm and post them to your blog—just like the rest of the networks that Ping.fm supports. There are other plugins that will theoretically post to Ping.fm every time you update your blog, but like you said, I’m not sure that they’re 100% working right now.

    The use case you described (having status updates distributed everywhere) is the scenario that I designed the plugin around, because that’s what I wanted to be able to do the most. This was a few years ago, before Twitter had really gotten popular, and I wanted my regular blog readers to be able to see some of the same updates I was posting to Twitter.

    Your plug in will is valuable. However, I can’t believe that there isn’t a solid solution to let wordpress users automatically update their social networks when they post an article / blog. It’s too valuable a tool. If Hootsuite get their skates on and allow self-hosted sites to join in their system, then that might provide the solution. But whoever does it, it’s sorely needed.
