• I want to setup WP with my godaddy hosting account. I used the form email to ask a question about mod_rewrite and stuff. They replied with the below. Should I be worried, and what functions “will not work properly”? Should I be worried?

Thank you for your email. We are currently running Apache 1.3, PHP 4.3.11, and MySQL 4.0.24. The mod_rewrite Apache module is enabled, but some php functions are disabled, which can cause some features of wordpress to not work correctly.

  • From posts here, you shouldn’t have a problem.

However, do NOT upload and activate the ‘Bad-Behaviour’ plugin. It will generate errors and you will need to delete it. Godaddy apparently do not want their users to protect themselves from spam the way a lot of us do.

I did do a search and have seen that godaddy installs were largly successful, but they crypic message got me thinking, what will NOT work?

I want to use GoDaddy also.

I’ll be watching this thread with great interest.

What does not work (and I’m referring to GoDaddy economy Linux hosting) is mod_rewrites of PHP files. In other words, forget deny IP in .htaccess (amongst other things)

“…SBOX rules are taking priority over the rewrite rules. This is preventing your DENY IP from functioning properly. Basically rewrite rules will not work on PHP files becuase our SBOX rules are preventing this.”

I’ve yet to have an adequate explanation (indeed, any explanation) from them as to *exactly* why they prevent PHP rewrites. Nor have I found an explanation anywhere as to why SBOX is being used (SBOX is a CGI wrapper script) like this.

If anybody here has some technical suggestions as to how GoDaddy might be convinced to lift the ban on PHP rewrites, I’d be pleased to hear them. Anybody have experience of SBOX? Is GoDaddy using it incorrectly? AFAIK, only GoDaddy hosting is using SBOX to prevent PHP rewrites in this way.

Having said all that, I’ve no other complaints.

I use TRK Hosting and have had no problems with support for WebPress, Mambo, Jumbla and other cms programs. Having Fantastico available free for latest version installs is
    great.

If you are still having problems with permalinks, then check out my brief tutorial on getting Search Engine Friendly URLs on GoDaddy without mod_rewrite.
