establishing admin options on install

Writing a plugin which has lots of admin options. I have them all set to reasonable defaults but when I activate the plug-in, they don’t get added to the database until I go to the admin page and hit the submit button.

I’m sure it’s a common thing to do this. Is there an example anyone can point to? What am I missing in my code?
