• Hi,

I tried to install several plugins, the last being WP-Contact form, that are supposed to have an option tab in the main Option Panel. As to WP-Contact Form, as I click the tab option I get an error 404: ‘Not Found – The requested document was not found on this server’. Strangely enough, the tab option link points to /wp-admin/options-contactform.php, whereas the plugin is installed in /wp-content/plugins/wp-contactform/. If I remove the ‘options-contactform.php’ file to /wp-admin/, then I get a Fatal error. I had the same “error 404” problem with Xinha plugin and a few others that installed an option tab. I searched several posts to troubleshooting it, unsuccessfully. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestion.

Please follow the proper installation instructions for WP-ContactForm:

    1. Upload wp-contactform.php and options-contactform.php to your plugins folder, usually wp-content/plugins/

Thanks, this worked. But I also understand another thing: the plugins location is not stable between developers. In fact, some plugin developers ask that you place their plugin folder in \plugins, and that’s it, whereas others ask that their plugin files be put directly in \plugins. Others even ask that some of their plugin files be put directly in \admin\. In most cases, you can activate the plugins from the Admin panel properly, but then some functions may work or not. Therefore I think that less freedom should be given to developers to plugin files location, since it tends to produce confusion by end users.

As the plugin developers in question are using their precious spare time to freely develop and support their plugins, they should do whatever works best for them, and we, the end-users of this free blogging platform, should accommodate them by paying close attention to their instructions.

Just my 2 cents. The world of free software works differently than the world of commercial software. We can’t restrict what the developers do, because they will simply decide that they have better things to do.

Well, that was not my interpretation of the issue: I know a bit of open source developers, who also use their time to freely write code for different apps. All I notice is that sometimes, giving a more precise frame for development, whithout being too much restrictive, prevents confusion and long forum discussions… 😉
