just ready about the 3.0.4 update.

rather than doing an entire install of the package and risking that i mess up whatever could get messed up, is it possible taht i could just upload these 5 new files (the ones listed as being revised) and that’s all i need to do???

    wp-includes/version.php
    wp-includes/formatting.php
    wp-includes/kses.php
    readme.html
    wp-admin/includes/update-core.php

when i do the update through the dashboard, does it just override the five new files? or does it override ALL of the wordpress files? even those that haven’t changed?

    all files are over-written
you can just upload the changed files and run upgrade.php

    thanks!

Samuel – loading the 4 files seems to be it. When I ran the upgrade.php, it says no upgrade needed, WP is latest version.

I appreciate this thread. Seems silly to run a full update (nearly 30MB) when it’s four tiny files.
    Thanks!

i know the readme.html was updated and they’re saying this new version should be uploaded in this new update but I normally delete the readme.html from the remote site for security purposes, so that someone breaking in will have less of a clue about what they’re looking at.

so is it necessary that there’s a new readme.html file in the remote site or can i skip that part of the update???

ADDITIONAL QUESTION: I’m not realizing that some of the sites i’m updating still have pre-3.0.3 versions installed (for example 3.0.1 or some 2.0 version). Can i simply install these 5 new files onto an pre-3.0.3 version and be all done? Or are there special steps I need to take?

Strange thing over here: I replaced the 5 files with FTP.

In the dashboard it is noted that I am using version 3.0.4 – but on the top of the dashboard the message which tells me that I should upgrade is still there.

goldmember – You can skip the readme file.

tin68 – Do a hard refresh on the page. There are some caching issues. You may also need to run upgrade.php to force it to catch up.

I started upgrade.php – nothing changed, message still there.

But, what is a “hard refresh on the page”?

BTW. I restarted the browser with deleted cookies, contend and stored data.

    thanks Ipstenu.

I’d like to reclaim this thread and continue on with the general upgrade discussion.

That being said, I’d like to get back to my second question:

I’m realizing that some of the sites i’m updating still have pre-3.0.3 versions installed (for example 3.0.1 or some 2.0 version). Can i simply install these 5 new files onto an pre-3.0.3 version and be all done? Or are there special steps I need to take?

    please advise. thanks in advance!

If you’re upgrading 2.0 to 3.0.x, then read the extended upgrade instructions. Those are MAJOR upgrades. You have to do the whole nine years.

From 3.0 to 3.0.4 there are a lot more files. You can see ’em:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Version_3.0.1
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Version_3.0.2
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Version_3.0.3
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Version_3.0.4

    So as needed πŸ™‚

so in short, if the current version is < 3.0.3 i should do the larger upgrade process??? otherwise i might be missing other files upgrades that occurred over previous upgrades.

Seems a problem in update-core.php of the German version from http://wordpress-deutschland.org/download/

With update-core.php from http://de.wordpress.org/ the message has gone. Thanks.

    goldmember – Yes.

tin68 – That first URL isn’t an official WordPress site. In the future, DO NOT use anything but the official WP sites for WordPress source.
