I can get as far as setting the app permissions but after that I get 500 errors. Would love to use this plugin but right now it's essentially broken for me.

Try deactivating all other plugins and then activate this plugin, See if it works

Yeah, that didn't work. Does anyone have any debugging suggestions, i.e. good places to put debug statements in the code? I don't normally hack on WP but I know how to set up remote debugging using xdebug. I've poked around in status-updater.php & callback.php but haven't dug deep enough at this point to know where my debug efforts would be best rewarded.
