• I just manually upgraded from WP 3.0.1 to 3.0.3 because the automated update failed. However, now when visiting the WP site the viewer is prompted for login credentials, which didn’t happen prior. The credentials that are required are the actual server admin credentials. Once I enter the server admin credentials I can access the site. However, no users will be able to do so.

How did this happen and how do I fix this please?

    Cheers.

  • bumping topics is against forum rules – don’t do it

it sounds like a directory got password protected in your cpanel
this is not something wordpress can do

Bumping topics? Appologies if I did something wrong here however, I have no idea what that means.

Regarding CPanel, there is no CPanel.

ah… I just googled “bumping topic”. I was not bumping the topic. I am merely asking for help here as the site is suddenly not accessable to viewers as they are now suddenly being prompted to login which did not happen prior to the manual upgrade of 3.0.3 from 3.0.1 because the automated update failed.

As already mentioned I have no CPanel. I host my own servers and can access and touch them directly.

Something in the manual update of WP is now causing users to be prompted for login credential in order to access the site.

As no one has been able to access the site for the last 2 hours since this happened (and since I posted the original post) I am merely asking please for assistance as I don’t know what changed and or where to go to fix the issue so users are not prompted to login to the blog in order to view it.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

This is not a WordPress issue but a hosting one, as Samuel already indicated.

I suggest you check your htaccess files in root.

I am happy to hear it is not a WordPress issue. However, the issue happened after the manual upgrade as I indicate.

I have looked in the root of the blog (I am assuming that is the root you are referring to) and I see no file named “htaccess”.

You do not have permission to view this directory or page due to the access control list (ACL) that is configured for this resource on the Web server.

ACL – access control list. I suggest you investigate where that would be set for your server and see if something has been set that shouldn’t have been. If you are unable to find them then the next step would normally be to contact your web hosts… so in your case I would suggest reading up on your servers software to locate where they are stored on your set up.

As it appears you are on IIS, you might not have htacess files. But I would normally look in the blog root and upwards.

have a look at how you set up the sub domain, the issue might lie there.

I appreciate the assistance. However, there is no .htaccess file as I mentioned. I confirmed that show hidden and system files is enabled and have searched the server including specifically in the root of the blog folder.

There has been no changes to IIS. This was all working as expected prior to the upgrade to 3.03. a few hours ago. The only thing that has happened is manually upgrading to 3.0.3 because the automated upgrade failed.

There is nothing in the Server log files that indicate there was any issue.

I am now in the process of restoring the backed snapshot of the server prior to the upgrade in order to get the site back up and running.

The server has been successfully restored from the snapshot taken prior to the upgrade to 3.0.3 and the previous version 3.0.1 is working as it was prior and the blog listed above is now working as well.

Perhaps the issue is as I mentioned something to do with 3.0.3.
