IE Users Can't Comment (38 posts)

    I'm having a problem where Internet Explorer users cannot comment on my blog (www.kduck.net) ... I use Firefox, so it is not a problem. However, when an IE user clicks on the link, it either 1) doesn't open the link or 2) Does not let them type in the comment box ... I made some cosmetic changes to my blog last night but nothing major. What could be the problem?

    Everyone's help is appreciated!

    hmm, what could be the problem besides they are using IE? You should take anything IE users have to say with dose of reality anyway... as the saying goes... "Too dumb to come in out of the rain or use a better browser."

    Solving your question as presented is like searching for a needle in a haystack... blindfolded.

    I wish everyone would use Firefox!

    Hmm ... I've had it there for a few months without problem but I'll try it ...

    It may not be that, but it is a layout issue, there is an "invisible layer" over the content in IE ;-). Could be an open div, or something similar. You might also try to validate your page to see if the current errors are causing the problem.

    Try this... comment out the sidebar call in the file.

    I just posted a comment on your blog (it was tricky) so the issue is one of layout - I would first fix the improper XHTML (I still think it is something in the sidebar causing the problem).

    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://www.kduck.net/?p=441&charset=(detect+automatically)&doctype=Inline&ss=1&verbose=1

    You have this in your sidebar </br> I don't know, but even something like that may "break" ability to write in the comment form.

    "Try this... comment out the sidebar call in the file."

    I don't understand what you mean

    In the file it has <?php get_sidebar() ?> (or something similar, depending on how old your theme is). You can comment it out with <?php // get_sidebar() ?> and temporarily remove the entire sidebar to see if it is the problem area.

    your comment came though so i'm not sure if it's working now or not ... because, like i said, it worked on my IE for Mac, but not for the PCers before

    It is not working - I had to "tab" through to get to the commentform, I still cannot select it with my mouse. This was just a test to make sure my suspicion was correct.

    Fix the br tag I mentioned above, too. This is going to be a simple fix, just hard to track down.

    ok, i edited out the sidebar and erased the BR ... what do you think?

    (Thanks for this help, by the way)

    Yep, comments now "work". Throw back in the sidebar, fix the incorrect br tag and lets figure out what is wrong in the sidebar. Incidentally, it is not just the comments, you cannot select any text or click any links in the main content area.

    And your page is valid XHTML without the sidebar ;-)

    So is the problem. Let's look at the CSS. There is at least one error there, too:

    h3
    border-bottom: 1px dotted #ccc;
    font-family: Verdana, Arial, Palatino, Sans-Serif;
    margin-top: 0;
    }

    Ok, I added the '{'

    Well, that wasn't it. Perhaps it is the way you have positioned the sidebar in the css. Hopefully one of the CSS gurus will take a looksee. I haven't seen too many set with a -250px top margin.

    I am having a similar problem with my "Pages"
    Example: http://www.beyourowndetective.com/blog/?page_id=7
    No place to add your comments. This is however working fine on my main blog page: http://www.beyourowndetective.com/blog
    However you have to click on the "no comments" link to get an add your comments form.

    We could all quit using MSIE and use Mozilla to work around these bugs personally for ourselves, but this does not address the problem for all the other millions of users around the World who are using MSIE. This is a known bug that needs to be fixed.

    ND, you "problem" is absolutely NOT related to the OP.
    Your blog is working exactly as intented:
    - on Pages there are no comments
    - on main/index.php the comments are never displayed just a link to them
    - the comment form is visible on the singlle post view

    That's a standard blog behaviour. What's your problem?

    There's no problem. I'm new to blogs.

    What is the intended purpose of the pages if there are no comments there?

    Initially it was intended for "static" content, like AboutUs, Contact etc.

    My intention was to create multiple blogs under one Wordpress installation, but it looks like I am using it the wrong way. I was attempting to use the Pages as new blogs.

    Multiple blogs under one installation?
    Risking to hijack this thread - NO.

    So how about getting back to the problem of the OP?

    So should I fix that -250 px? I love my design, and that would suck to have to get rid of it.

    Wordpress Multiuser Edition looks like the perfect solution but I might want to wait. It's currently unstable.
