How to add non-link li's to a 3.0 custom menu?

I want to add a couple of bits of text within li’s to a custom menu. If I hard code them, then the custom menu starts a new ul before the custom menu li’s and hence puts the hard-coded li’s on a separate line – I want everything within one ul and displayed inline. Is there any way to either get rid of the automatic ul or to make menu items that aren’t links? I know I can just put no URL in a custom link field, but then they end up displaying the :hover function (in this case, changing color) and they look like links, which I think would be confusing to visitors. I just want plain ol’ text, no hover. Thanks.
