Widget as menu…?

I’ve been noodling around with a theme that uses the new menu feature in 3.0 (basically ganking the template code from the 2010 theme). I’d like to do something a little non-standard with it, specifically, display the contents of a text widget as a menu dropdown, so that when I hover over the “About” menu, I see the text from a text widget (also titled “About,” incidentally).

Any thoughts on how to pull this together? I’ve got a modest proficiency with PHP/
