I just wanted to let you guys know the Akismet plugin as now available for all WordPress users:
Download it and install it like a regular plugin, then plug in your WordPress.com API key to activate it. (If you're not on WordPress.com yet you can get on without an invite by using Flock.)
Let me know if you have any questions.
Just to make it clear for myself: I don't have a wp.com account and I don't even want one. I don't want to sign up.
Can I still use this thing?
You need to have a WP.com account, you don't need to blog there, but the API key is "key" to the service, so to speak. :)

Can't find an invite, can't get an API key, please explain this better guys!
In order to use Akismet, you must have a WordPress.com API key. If you have a WordPress.com blog, you can find your API key lists in your profile menu. More info: http://faq.wordpress.com/2005/10/19/api-key/
If you don't have a WordPress.com blog, you can request an invite by either entering your email address into the "Want an invite?" field, or try Flock (as detailed on the WordPress.com page).
I'm running Akismet right now..too early to tell how effective it is vs. SK2, but I like a few things:
1) The moment I turned it on, it immediately tagged about 800 of my spams.
2) It adds no weight to my database

Okay, I just gotta say.... I like the look & feel of Flock.... gonna start using it more. And I finaly got a WP.com blog.... I like how the admin looks as well vs the standard WP. I'm a little disappointed in the theme selection (I thought there would be more) but I assume that will come in time.
Gonna poke around some more.

Jeez Matt. If you spent more time handling the problems from wordpress.com and less on providing another browser for us to have to twink css for, things would be a WHOLE lot better. Web designers do NOT need another crap browser to have to work around....
Sheesh. "Process-oriented" must be your middle name, right? Try changing it to "goal-oriented" - as in fix the stuff that's wrong with the LAST thing you "produced"....
Ummm ... Matt didn't produce Flock, nor is he listed as one of the developers. And, Flock really isn't "another crap browser". It's a weblog client combined with a browser. It may seem pointless to some, but others have found it to be highly useful. You also shouldn't have to worry about "twinking css for it", as Flock's browser core is based off of Firefox.
Now, back on topic, we are discussing Akismet ("a collaborative effort to make comment and trackback spam a non-issue and restore innocence to blogging"), not Flock.

Oh? Well, last few posts were re flock. *shrug* Whatever. Point still stands, no matter whether Matt's listed in/on/around flock or not. The POINT is that Matt's obviously too busy playing around with other crap to finish the "current project" so the rest of us don't have to mess with people using wordpress.com - those, you know, who haven't a clue, and can't get help from those who SHOULD be helping.
I'm sorry, vkaryl, but as a regular WP support forum member, you should know that you can't comprehend a thread just by reading the last three posts. We brought up Flock because it was the easiest and quickest way to get a WordPress.com invite. For more info, please read the entire thread.
Now, what WordPress.com really needs is a big notice on the front page stating the system is still in the testing stages.

And, another thing, Akismet is not "other crap". It's the furthest thing from "other crap". And, I am glad that Matt took a short break to develop it. In fact, Matt began working on Akismet around the same time that WordPress.com was released. If you would just spend one minute to clam down and read about it or even try it, you would understand.
Automattic Kismet (Akismet for short) is a collaborative effort to make comment and trackback spam a non-issue and restore innocence to blogging, so you never have to worry about spam again. When a new comment, trackback, or pingback comes to your blog it is submitted to the Akismet web service which runs hundreds of tests on the comment and returns a thumbs up or thumbs down. There is EVERY need for those who are promoting wordpress.com to work on helping those who are using it.
Regardless, I am NOT the one who brought up flock. You apparently think every thread should remain sterile and not go off at a tangent. Good luck.
Just to clear another thing up, Akismet is not "another piece of software like that". Yes, it is like Spam Karma, but Akismet is a community effort. The entire community contributes to analyse spam and stop it cold. Like I said, read a little bit about, and try it out if you have the time.
And, you did bring up Flock. You mentioned "another browser", and the only browser mentioned in this thread is Flock. If you thought that Akismet is "another browser", than I truely am sorry for you. I know what its like to be frustrated beyond the point of comprehension.

On topic : I am quite happy with my current spam situation or rather, lack of spam situation. Using a plugin that requires a key, or already has a commercial cost associated with it, or could possibly be fee-based in the future is not going to be something I want to be involved in. Thanks but no thanks.

Ajay, Akismet is a web service that stops spam, you can use it on your personal blog by downloading the plugin on the site. Like most web services you need an "API key" to access everything.
vkaryl, I have no idea what I did to you, but there is probably a better venue to discuss it.
