• Hi,
although I’ve been creating websites using PHP for a good few years, I’m new to the whole MySQL / WordPress thing.

I’m hoping to install WordPress locally on my Mac OSX 10.4.11 desktop.

I’ve been working my way through the tutorial at
http://maczealots.com/tutorials/wordpress/ but I can’t seem to configure MySQL.

I think I’ve successfully configured mySQL (I got the output ‘Query OK, 1 row affected’ when I created the database), PHP is working, yet running the installer brings up the ‘Error establishing a database connection’. I’ve spent two evenings on this so far (more than 5 minutes!) – any ideas where I should be looking next?

    Any help appreciated…

Broken link – thanks for the thought, though!

    Try again – this page.

running the installer brings up the ‘Error establishing a database connection’.

Can you connect to the database using phpMyAdmin with the same database log in details that are in the WP config file?

@esmi – thanks, but that’s where I started to begin with! That’s how I ended up at the tutorial I mentioned in my first post.

@obscure – not sure. How would I connect to phpMyAdmin? I set up PHP on my mac ages ago (I think just by turning on Personal Web Sharing). I also set up MySQL at a point previously (using MAMP, I think), but didn’t get anywhere with it so haven’t touched it since. As such, I skipped the tutorial stages about installing MySQL and PHP (but the testing side of things seemed to imply they’re working fine).

It seems you are not in control of your Web server. Do you have correct details for MySQL? Maybe, you should delete your existing server installation and reinstall a server. I would suggest you use XAMPP.

Thanks – maybe that’s the way to go (although it might be good to try the phpMyAdmin thing first).

Will I be safe to just install XAMPP without risking my computer? Not sure how to uninstall the server (In fact, not even sure if the MAMP app is still on the machine – I think I dragged it to the trash when I got annoyed with it!)
