Good evening all. I just put together a WordPress site for a client and he was dropped from the hosting service when his credit card was put on hold for fraud. The hosting company said once a chargeback has been initiated, they cannot accept our business. I moved him over to Blue Host and now all I have is a zip file from our old host with the _home directory. I reinstalled WP on Blue Host and copied over the admin, content and includes folders.

Everything looks the same but the posts and pages are gone. How can I get them back with the materials I have been given?

    Thanks!

  • You can’t. You need the mysql database export to recover the posts and content.

WordPress is in two parts, the WordPress files that live in your home directory (as well as any images or other media you may have uploaded) and the database of blog posts/pages (often stored on a separate server).

You have only got half the site (arguably not the important part) unless you, or your client, took a backup of the database. If you are unable to log in to the previous host you are probably out of luck.

For future ref there is a plugin that will backup your database when you are going to do an upgrade – http://www.ilfilosofo.com/blog/wp-db-backup. It can do an automatic weekly/daily backup (and email it to you). Very useful for avoiding similar situations in the future.

I ended up just searching Google for the cached sites and copy and pasting then relinking all of the images from the new domain. Thanks for the advice on the SQL parts that I was missing!
