Wanted: Replace-all Quick Tab

I would like to be able to highlight a selection of text in the post input form and then click a button in the quick tags menu that would convert all tabs to pipes (|). Is anyone familiar with where to start on this? I can limp my way through javascript if I have to but I’m crossing my fingers hoping someone has wanted to do this type of mod before.
