Comments not working for custom post types

    Greetings all. For some reason comments are not working in custom post types. When you try to post it gives you this message:

    Sorry, comments are closed for this item.

    In regular posts comments work fine. I confirmed that comments are enabled for the custom posts. Any ideas?
