• I am a bit hazy in this area so I am asking you guys!

According to the GNU GPL v3 License, are you able to take a PHP script and rename it as your own, as long as you do not alter the copyrights located in the source code? Are there any other requirements/restrictions besides not editing the copyrights in the source code?

This question has nothing to do with rebranding WordPress. I am posting this message here because WordPress is by far the most popular, open source blogging software and many people here are familiar with open source licenses.

In general, you are free to modify and redistribute any GPL-licensed code, so long as it is also released under the same GPL license.

For example, WordPress is released under the GPLv2. You are free to modify and redistribute it, so long as the resulting product is also released under the GPLv2.

Each GPL license has its own specific requirements beyond the general rules, so read the license carefully.
