• Hi All

Unfortunatelly I have had to use a backup to reorganize my wordpress folders in my server. Besides the database I also used the Tools–> Export tool to sabe the XML files.

Long story short I reinstalled WordPress, the backup database as well and have imported the XML files.

My site now shows broken links for all images or links that lead to nowhere (if at all), things are our of position and I had to re-install all the plugins. I am using the Twnety Ten theme (was using anyhow). My host says that my issue is now a WordPress issue and I should get help here.

I know next to nothing about programing, IT or whatever, so I would need very precise instructions on how to proceed.

I would really appreciate any help.

    Federico

  • Best way to restore a lost WordPress is to restore the database and all the files that were on your web site. Reinstalling WordPress and importing XML is a less desirable alternative for those without a backup of files and database. Generally speaking, doing both just messes things up.

Thanks for the fast reply adiant

This might be a dumb question, but when you speak of a backup of the files, what do you mean? I thought that a database backup saves everything, files and all. How would I go about saving wordpress files? Is there a plugin or something?

No, a WordPress install consists of about a thousand files and some tables in a database. You need both. For examples, images/photos are stored as files. But an image is associated with a post or page with information in a row of a database table.

I used to use FTP to backup my files to my hard drive. Now I use cPanel’s File Manager and its Compress option to create a single .tar.gz file on my web site when I then FTP to my hard drive. Kind of like .zip in Windows. 7Zip is a Windows program that will read .gz format.

Not sure about plug-ins. I just never looked.

When creating the database backup of my site the file downloaded was a .dmp.gz file . I then had to upload it to the new WP installation. Should this .dmp.gz include the images?

The odd thing is that I have checked on the media galleries of several of the pages of my site and it says that , for example, it has 5 photos but they do not appear. I then click on “show” and they do pop up, but even if i ask wp to insert it into the post it wont.

One photo plugin that i have also seems to recognize that i have 2 galleries with x and y photos in each, but when trying to view the galleries all the info is there of each image-minus the image itself.

    Does this give any clues?

Yes, from the behavious you have described, this is obviously a “normal” database backup. Where only the WordPress database tables are backed up. Images are files just like all the components of WordPress, Plug-ins, Styles, the wp-config.php configuration file, etc. And just like files on your home computer.
