• we have hacked the default Recent Post widget to lomit title_length and to limit the display to just one category, but there seems to be a bug with the category limit, any idea?

  • but there seems to be a bug with the category limit

    how does this show?
    too many categories? wrong category? no categories?

    assuming this is your adition:

    if (!in_category(8, get_the_ID())) {
                  continue;
                }

    what is the purpose of ‘get_the_ID()’ in the code?

    would it not be as easy to introdue the category into the query:

    $r = new WP_Query(array('showposts' => $number, 'nopaging' => 0, 'post_status' => 'publish', 'caller_get_posts' => 1));

    for instance like so (untested):

    $r = new WP_Query(array('showposts' => $number, 'nopaging' => 0, 'post_status' => 'publish', 'caller_get_posts' => 1, 'cat' => 8));

    brilliant!
