    Hello everyone,

Today while I was logged into my Google Webmaster Tools account, I discovered that the “URL’s in web index” are different for each sitemap that I submitted. Is this normal? Or could I have possibly installed the plugin incorrectly?

Both sitemaps also have a green check-mark under “status”.

I also forgot to mention that I manually submitted both the sitemap.xml & sitemap.xml.gz to Google Webmaster Tools. Should I submit both sitemaps? Or should I just submit sitemap.xml.gz? The reason why I ask is because I am getting a far amount of crawl errors (404). And I have yet to figure out why.

    Thanks,
    Gordon

Yes, that’s normal. Though the two sitemaps are the same, and most of the URLs have been indexed from your site, Google is making a point of noting that only a certain number of URLs have been indexed directly from each sitemap. Since it will never download both sitemaps at the same time, Google may notice and index a new post in one sitemap one day, and then notice and index a new post in the other sitemap some other day.

I also forgot to mention that I manually submitted both the sitemap.xml & sitemap.xml.gz to Google Webmaster Tools. Should I submit both sitemaps? Or should I just submit sitemap.xml.gz?

You only need to submit one, and it sounds like you should remove one of them now to cut down on the confusion. I recommend keeping sitemap.xml.gz as your only submitted sitemap. It will save bandwidth.
