Hiding a post from main page but available otherwise

I’d like the ability to have a post be accessible on the site — like through a category search or a link in a side bar — but not have the post in my main loop of posts on the front page of my blog.

I’ve thought of an end-around: when making a post I do not want to appear on the main page, to change the “published on” date to the previous to the other posts on my main page. This works, I guess, but I’d rather have the true date associated with the post, but just have it not appear on the main site.
