bbPress isn’t “an unloved child.” You’re using it right now. Clearly someone loves it.
Honestly, I’d recommend using bbPress. There is an official bbPress plugin under development right now (too early to use, unfortunately), but this video will walk you through the integration process.
Okay, thanks for your feedback. Of course using bbPress would be the “convenient” solution, if it worked well. I’d rather not get into a discussion of bbPress’ shortcomings and the problems I see with it in combination with WP. If it works for you guys, great, but it doesn’t suit me.
So I’d still be very interested to hear whether there are any other options that users have successfully used.

bbPress is good but 1.0.2 has many bugs right now.
