It depends.
You need to have the dns and webserver configured such that the following is true:
- DNS – *.subdomain.domain.com must resolve to the same as subdomain.domain.com
- Web Server – Must accept subdomain.domain.com and *.subdomain.domain.com as valid and map them on to the correct WordPress install files
You really need to talk to your host to ensure that they can set this up for you as I think a lot of hosts won’t have this kind of setup enabled by default.
If you put it in a subdomain setup, you could also use the subfolder option and get subdomain.domain.com/usersiteshere/.

@andrea many thanks for clarifying.
No problem.
It will work in a subdomain, but on some hosts there have been issues. No idea why.
Andrea, do you know if there is any problem between subdomains, WP 3.0 and the plugin WP Subdomains? My WP still in a loop when using subdomain author.
Regards, Ray Baccaro
I haven’t used that plugin.
Andrea, I’ve tried everything possible, do you know any other plugin to treat the authors as subdomain on MU?
Hi rbaccaro
I dont know if there is a plugin for that but you could make the link
author.blogName.domain.com
redirect to author page with simple htaccess code.
