• I’m looking at upgrading to 3.0 and have been on since 2.0 so figure it might be time for a fresh clean install of wordpress.

I’m wondering what the steps should be or if anyone knows of a guide. I know it would basically be copy everything out, backup database, delete wordpress, delete database, create new database, install wordpress, copy over plugins, themes and uploads, copy appropriate db table over.

Do I need to do this or is it really unnecessary pain? Is there an easier way?

    Thanks.

  • You can’t copy a 2.9.2 db over a 3.0 install.

But, to be honest, I’m not sure why you want to run a new install if you’re just going to copy the db over. I would have thought that the point of a clean install would be start with a clean db and limit yourself to an export/import of content via Admin/Tools.

I’d plan on copying only the table in I need… I’m thinking it’s gonna be more headache than it’s worth. Probably best to do a quick auto-update to 3.0 and then manually clean out any unneeded DB table, folders, files, etc.

Even copying over tables could be a problem when moving from 2.9.2 to 3.0. There have been significant table changes between the versions.

I recently became aware of http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-optimize/

Not used myself yet (so I can’t guarantee its performance on 3.0) but, if it does work, you might find it useful. Just make sure that you backup the db first.
