Support » Themes and Templates » designing a site offline

  • Hi there

I’m very new to wordpress and have been playing around with different themes, and the editor, and realise there is a lot to learn and a lot of possibilities. However, I’m also keen on getting a basic site up and running asap so that I can start directing people towards it. Is there a simple way to play around with my website offline whilst keeping a basic design online straight away? Of course I know that I can also register another domain and have one for my ‘testing’ but is there a simpler way to do this?

    Many thanks

  • Have a look at a program named Xampp: http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

Basically it is a simple server for your pc. Easy to setup and includes all the features you need to run wordpress.
Once it is setup put the files in <your xampp installation>/htdocs.
Typing http://localhost or 127.0.0.1 will load the site in your browser as a normal hosted server would.

An other way to do it, is setting up a subdomain; beta.yourdomain.com and develop it from there.
That way, more people can cake part in the process.

I’m thinking about doing the same thing myself with the beta subdomain. I’m running WordPress 3.0.4 on my primary domain right now. Would I have to load another copy of WordPress into the beta subdomain, or is there a method to use what I’ve already got running? I want to set-up a new theme in the subdomain and move it to my primary domain when I’m happy with it.
