Didn't work when I tested it with the sample code.

    <a href="[iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/819138" width="100%" height="480"] shortcode"></a> or [iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/819138" width="100%" height="480"]</a>

Simply add this shortcode: [iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/819138" width="100%" height="480"]

    without link 'a' tags

    Tried this
    [iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/819138" width="100%" height="480"]

Didn't work either but I did not get the 406 error. Instead, I got a blank page. This is a working URL.

Can you send the link to page?

I meant the link to the vimeo video was a working page. I've tried three different WP iframe plugins and each gives the 406 error. I have since uninstalled each plugin but will reinstall yours, make a page with the above link and post it here.

Try to add raw code in html-mode: <iframe src="..."></iframe>

If it will return the same error, then the problem is not in the iframe plugin.

I was going to upload a file with images to show you, but that seems to be not allowed. When I make a page with only a title and this code [iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/819138" width="100%" height="480"] I end up here. hlgsitedemo.info with a title of "406 Not Acceptable" but since this is an unpublished error page I doubt you can see it.

I have used only html mode from the beginning. Since three different plugins return the same 406 error, I concluded before that it is not the plugin. Knowing that only tells me that I have no idea what can be the cause, but thanks for your help.

Can you view this video - http://player.vimeo.com/video/819138?

Can you embed other videos like YouTube or else?

I would recommend you to search in google what could cause 406 error code.

Thanks again. I found something about this in another thread and sent this support request to my website host.

I have tried testing 3 different WordPress plugins for using an iframe. Each test results in a 406 Not Acceptable error. The WordPress.org forum discussions indicate this could somehow be related to something called "suhosin security extension for PHP" could be responsible.

Can you check this for me?

Sorry, but I don't know nothing about it and I could not help you with this problem.
