Dear Alex,
I really like your popularity plug-in but unfortunately I cannot use it since I need to have the WP-CACHE plug-in installed and activated. Do you think you will ever make the popularity plug-in compatible with the WP-CACHE plug-in?
Thanks, keep up with the excellent work.
Massimo.

Doesn't seem to work with ShortStat plugin... I was only getting the popularity by comments until I deactivated ShortStat
I received an e-mail from the ShortStat plugin in late June where he explained the problem to me. I don't know if he's fixed it or not, but my strong opinion is that there is (or was) a very serious issue with the behavior of ShortStat that needed to be resolved.
Well, there is no newer version of ShortStat than the one I'm using... but anyway, been playing with your plugin today and I must say that is an excellent and very original idea. Good work!
Thanks for this excellent plugin. Right, now that the pleasantries are out of the way, here are the features I would like to see:
* Include Pages as well as Posts. My server logs tell me that some of myPages are far more popular than any of my Posts. I'd love them to be included in the popularity contest.
* Don't count trackbacks, pingbacks and comments made by the blog owner (this has already been requested by somebody else in another thread).
If I ever get any spare time I will look into the code and do them myself. But that's a big "if".
Something i'm looking to do, but can't figure out how:
Is there a way to make the plugin to show the most popular entries on the current month? I mean, to make it ALWAYS display the top 10 entries from all times in the current month, wether you are on the homepage, an archive page or whatever...
I think that way the list would be more dynamic, because there are posts that are too popular and you will always be getting the same Top 10.
I have been waiting for someone to post with a problem "installing" but it must be me. On my windoze box it would not create the table so I created the table myself. I then only got one record for the last post and hits on it. I figured there was a conflict with using W2K and possibly one or more of my plugins and just let it go.
Tonight I activated it on another site (nonW2K) and all appeared to go smoothly and tables were created. The site, however, was seriously crippled. Page view and category views croaked with "Table 'stjohnsb_gallery2.wp_ak_popularity' doesn't exist" so it looks like there is indeed a conflict with another plugin. It's a bummer because I don't have the skills so the time to track it down and fix it would be prohibitive (I am still updating sites and plugins that do work properly).
Still using and enjoying Alex's centaur (half plugin half hack ;-), WP-Photos, so it isn't a total loss... The admin section of this plugin is enticing, however.
If I get some time over the next couple weeks I'll try taking a look at ShortStat, but the original problem was one I'd consider a security issue from ShortStat.
I'll look at including pages too - I'm not entirely sure they aren't already included.
You can use the template tags to show whatever lists you want. It's just a matter of using the template tag you want.
If there are problems creating the tables, I recommend checking your MySQL user's permissions.
Alex,
I've just installed and activated this plugin into two different blogs: 1.5.1.3 and 1.5.2. I don't want the popularity of posts showing up at the end of each post and have not added the tag for it, nor is it in my post files(s). But, there's the percentage ranking anyway, showing up at the end of each post, before the post footer.
How do I get it off?
I just want it for admin stats and maybe to list most popular posts in the sidebar.
Great plugin, btw! I love the detailed info in the admin panel.
Oh, I also thought you might want to know that I have noticed that any post titles with code in them (one blog is a friend's and she has a few titles decorated with color) throws off the listings in the admin page wherever these "decorated" titles may appear.
You beat me to the punch. If ever I have the time to figure out how to get the gallery2 plugin to play nice with p.c., I was going to ask about adding the ability to disable that. Seems some don't like seeing "Popularity 1%" associated with their masterpiece ;-) and Pages remain "unranked"
Yes. I would much prefer to keep such tibits of information to myself, thank you. ;-)
Oh, and the table creation problem is not a permission level issue (other plugins create tables just fine... and WP is served off my home computer ;-)
And it would be nice, if the plugin it didn't wack the site should it not create the tables. I couldn't get back in to unplug it, hence creating the table by "hand" (though in retrospect, I suppose it would have been easier to simply rename the plugin).
I recommend reading the README if you want to know how not to show the popularity on each post.
Beel, no idea why it doesn't work for you, good luck.
Thank you and nice plugin Alex.
Oh, Mercy!! I am, like, immensely embarrassed!
I tried reading the README.txt, but in Notepad, which piled everything into one long paragraph. It's not very easy to read that way. My fault for no opening it in another application.
But then, there was no reason I couldn't have discovered the solution by just looking at the php file itself. Yet, DUH! Despite scouring it, I missed the absolute OBVIOUS in the first few lines of the script.
Alex, I'm really sorry. I was truly surprised when I couldn't find an easy solution to my issue from within one of your scripts. Given your reputation, I should have just kept looking, confident that the answer was there somewhere. Please forgive me.
It really is a great plugin.
Glad you're all set now. :)
Hi Alex,
Thanks for the great plugin...I have been using it for a while at www.fantasysportstrades.com however have never been able to use any of the admin features. When I click on the links either from the options page or the plugins page, I get taken to http://www.fantasysportstrades.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=popularity-contest.php but the page is blank, that is it just is basically the dashboard page with nothing on it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry, no idea what the problem is there.
I posted this in the thread for 1.0, and I'm posting it here too, in case no one reads that old thread anymore:
I would love to calculate popularity of posts by manual voting, such as a button for every post that says "Flag for 'Best Of'". Could you add manual voting to the popularity criteria?
So how about it? I've tried another tack, but it wasn't successful. I think having vote/flag buttons in Popularity Contest would be very elegant.
Thanks for the plugin!
I have tweaked Popularity Contest so it includes Pages as well as Posts. I also fixed a potential incompatibility with other plugins. To get this tweaked version, see my Semicolon post Popularity Contest for Pages. I did this in the hope that Alex will incorporate my (simple) changes into the next version.
Posting a fork without even notifying the original author isn't generally the way to get someone to adopt your changes.
I have installed version 1.1 but it does not count posts, permalink and archive views in the control panel. Do I miss something?
If you have problem with this plugin then check if you have the Google sitemap plugin istalled. In this case dowload the tweaked version here http://www.thunderguy.com/semicolon/2005/09/22/popularity-contest-for-pages/
Hi Alex,
I searched all over the WP support forums... but no one seems to be having the same problem as me.
For some strange reason Popularity Contest is showing n% on pages...
I noticed in the readme how to dissable the showing for all posts, but I want posts to show it, just not on pages. Is there a work-around for this?
I think looking at my site can explain it better than I can:
http://www.freeidea.org
Thank you again for this wonderful plugin and all the hard work you do with WordPress.
Cheers,
Keith
There needs to be an additional check on line 1654:
if ($ak_show_popularity_with_post == 1 && !is_feed()) {
should be:
if ($ak_show_popularity_with_post == 1 && !is_feed() && !is_page()) {
Completely untested - hope it works.
Thank you for the quick response Alex. :)
I tried this out but it doesn't seem to be doing much. It still displays "popularity %" on pages *sobs*
I can't code to save my rear, but I assume && !is_page() means to exlude pages not including them? ...since $ak_show_popularity_with_post == 1 (and not 0)
And another funny thing, if its showing popularity % on pages, why don't they show up in the "Most Popular Posts" on the Dashboard? ;)
Thank you again for your time and help,
Keith
