404 logging and redirect?

I’m having a hell of time understanding how to setup the 404 redirects with this plugin. What I noticed is that there were no redirects in the 404 group, so I created a Group (Redirects) there. I then added a Redirect to that group (with REGEX), but when I did this, it seems this redirect never takes affect, I still end up on 404 page. (yes, I’ve tried it without the REGEX, it still does not redirect, I always get the 404 page?).
From what I see here in other posts, if you do this, you lose 404 logging, is that correct?
Is there a basic strategy I should be using to assign my REGEX 404 pages to redirects? If so, can you please share exactly how you do it, and, do you still get to log 404’s after it’s done?
I love the redirects and how they work, but I’m struggling to understand why the 404’s will not work properly. (btw – I have the Apache module off).
