'404 - File or directory not found' when trying to install? (8 posts)

    Hi,

I'm trying to install wordpress but when I go to http://www.bikesandcake.co.uk/wp-admin/install.php I get the following error:

404 - File or directory not found.

The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

I've checked my wp-config file, and all my files are under my root directory (htdocs in this instance). All the files are present too, and I have copied the files over to the server twice now to double check.

I've installed wordpress many times before without problems, but I'm stumped by this.

    Any suggestions gratefully received.

    Thank you.

It's possible to get a 404 error if your file permissions are wrong.

What you might try is to go into your FTP program and right-click on files like install.php and "get info" or preferences to see the file permissions. If you are installing WP, try temporarily setting the file permission to 755. Do you install and then promptly delete the install.php file. You will not need it once the install is completed. IF you really want to keep the file around, change the permissions to 644.

    :)

DELETE all WP files and WP MySQL DB.

Create a new MySQL DB (new user with all priviliges)

Upload again all the files (WordPress 3.4.2 files- http://wordpress.org/latest.zip)

    When uploaded, goto http://www.bikesandcake.co.uk/wp-admin/install.php .

    Follow some on screen instruction..

And it will get installed without any errors.

    .....
If still facing error, your HOST/SERVER may be temporary down.
Better contact your web host if still facing problems :)

Confirm with your hosts that PHP is running on your site.

Thanks for all your help so far.

PHP wasn't running, but now is. Progress of sorts - I'm not getting

    500 - Internal server error.
There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.

when I try to run the install file.
