404 error page does not work outside the /index.php/ (1 post)

    in my wordpress installation all url errors inside inside the index.php seem to work:
    for example
    http://www.website.com/index.php/adòlkfj
    or http://www.website.com/index.php/ad/sd/sdkf
    or anything of that sort takes me to the proper 404 wordpress not found page..
    but:
    http://www.website.com/index
    or http://www.website.com/aseewdc/
    does not bring me to to the proper 404 wordpress not found page.
    ive tried adding the
    ErrorDocument 404 /index.php?error=404
    in the htaccess file to no avail..
    any ideas?
