404 Error Message on Home Page Before Any Changes Were Made (8 posts)

    Hi,

I just began to make a WordPress website. I installed WordPress through Bluehost. However before began to make any changes to my site, there was an error message on the homepage instead of the generic first post, "Hello world!" that comes with a brand new site. The error message reads:

"This is somewhat embarrassing, isn’t it? It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching, or one of the links below, can help."

I have read through everything I can find on this forum, but can't fix it. So far I have tried making a new posts, making a new home page, and setting a static homepage. None of which have worked. The front page is set to "Home" and should just say "Site Under Construction". I set the Post Page to "News" and that page works. This is the site:

If you have any suggestions I would be so thankful! I am pretty good with computers, but I do not know html code and I have a feeling something went wrong witht the code...

    Thank you so much!!!

    The error message reads:

That's not an error message as such. It just means that you haven't actually published your static front page yet.

Thank you for such a quick reply. I thought I had already published the static front page, but just to make sure I tried changing the static front page to the "Sample Page" wordpress gives you when you start. Now if you look at the site there are 2 home pages on the menu tab (on being the one I created and one now being the "Sample Page" which is the static page.") The error still remains.

In Settings -> Reading, switch it back to "Recent Posts" and then read creating a static front page.

I followed the instructions exactly and the problem persists. One thing to note is that I cannot set the permalink setting to "default". If this happens, I get a 404 error message from Bluehost. I can use the "day and time" permalink setting, but right now I have the custom setting selected and inserted "/%pagename%/". I don't know if this is correct, but I don't think it is creating the problem with my homepage.

Try re-installing WordPress. The permalink issue will be causing (or be a root part of) your current problems.

Thank you for your help. I had to contact Bluehost to help me completely wipe all the documents and folders before I reinstalled WordPress (as I had already un-installed and re-installed it twice). Turned out there a was an index.php somewhere in the public_html folder that had not been created by WordPress and had even been created before we registered with Bluehost that was overridding the homepage (hence the error message). Now that file is gone, I can finally start makeing the real website! Your quick replies were really appreciated. I saw on your website that your company aims to help small businesses, especailly woman-owned businesses, construct websites. I am making this website for a woman-owned architecture firm in the US, so your help is even more appreciated. Thanks!
