    I have permalinks showing as

    http://www.server.com/index.php/permalink/structure

if test for a 404 by adding randmon garbage to the url
    http://www.server.com/index.php/permalink/structurekjshdkabcnaisua
    or
    http://www.server.com/index.php/permalink/structure/lksjhf

then wordpress displays page.php - and posts everything in the db!!

what do i need to change to force the 404 instead?
i have a 404.php file and it is called when someone enters
    http://www.server.com/badLink
but any bad permalink hits page.php

    please help

    thanks

I found the answer!!! I am using a static page as my front page so the problem was i didn't have anything set for the posts page. In the dashboard - settings - reading, if a static page is the front page make sure that a posts page is also selected. I just made a blank page and made that the posts page. Problem solved
